Falconry Lessons in Kilkenny, Ireland (2025)

What better way to learn about a cultural tradition than to take class? Historically, falconry was a country sport of noblemen, featuring magnificent hawks, falcons, and owls in their pursuit of prey. The birds ultimately are trained to be the falconer’s hunting partner. We were lucky enough to get to experience the thrill for ourselves at Hawkeye Falconry.

Maggie: Owl Encounter

Our falconry experience started off with Maggie, a XXXX owl. She’s petite and softer than you can ever imagine! Check out her fierce orange eyes - so captivating!

Mabel: A Walk with a Hawk

We strolled around the estate grounds, while Mabel took to the trees awaiting our signal to fly to our gloves and earn a snack. In between flights, we took turns walking with her perched on our arms. I loved how she watched me with a tilted head as I told her she was such a good girl.

Our time with Mabel was the absolute best part of the lesson!

Peregrine Falcon Hunt

Our falconry instructor led a demonstration to show the incredible speed and hunting skill of a peregrine falcon. They used an app that tracked the falcon’s flight path and speed, which topped out at 90 mph! Check out the way our instructor throws the lure, which the falcon catches with a delicious reward attached.

Meeting a Blue Eagle

This blue eagle is a BIG bird! It was a bit of an arm workout to hold him for several minutes. At one point he even spread his wings out wide while he was perched on Jamie’s arm.

Fun fact: He likes to take selfies, too!
